A perennial favorite way to beat the summer heat in the Asheville area is riding down the chilly waters of Sliding Rock in Pisgah National Forest. The natural waterslide is complete with 55-60 degree water for a refreshing time. Plus, many waterfalls are located nearby.
Feel the rush of sliding down a 60-foot all-natural water slide in the heart of gorgeous Pisgah National Forest! The appropriately named Sliding Rock is an experience unlike any other and it’s one of the most exciting ways to cool off in the warmer weather months.
People of all ages lineup to take the plunge down the sloping rock face waterfall on their way to landing into an 8-foot-deep pool of water. Given that the water is about 50-60 degrees during the season, it’s sure to be a refreshing adventure! If sliding isn’t your thing, there are two observation decks where you can experience the fun from a safe distance.
The best time to slide is between Memorial Day and Labor Day when lifeguards are on duty and the on-site bathroom/changing rooms are open. There is a fee of just $4 per person to enter the recreation area. Credit card is the preferred method of payment but cash and check are also accepted.

I am a lifelong cyclist, enjoying the aspects of both road and mountain bike culture. My entire adult life has been in bicycle retail. Beginning my career in 1974, I began as a bicycle mechanic, moved on to manage a high end shop, then opened and operated my own pro shop for over 25 years. Throughout this period I never lost interest in the mechanical development of cycling: I very much enjoy building wheels, complete frame builds, and restoring both mountain and road bikes.
BikeWorks in Sylvania, Ohio was my life for the past 28 years. The shop expanded and changed with the times from a small retail space to a larger location that made space for custom bike and fit studio, establishing BikeWorks as northwest Ohio’s premier bike shop.
Through the decades, I was witness to the monumental advancements in cycling technology that have revolutionized bikes and the way people ride them: new frame materials, electronic shifters, disc brakes, and carbon fiber advancements to name a few.
Through these same decades, I was at the forefront of fit training and technology: FitKit, Pro Bike Fit, Trek School of Fitting, Paul Swift and since 2009, 3D Motion Capture by Retul. It is with the advancement of fit technology that my career has taken shape from a retail store owner to a custom bike and fit expert.
Having the knowledge, expertise and tools to connect a customer to a one of a kind custom bike has been the most satisfying aspect of my years in the bicycle world.
My collection of personal bikes ranges from restored vintage race bikes to cutting edge road and mountain bikes, custom road, mountain and randonneur bikes and tandems. My enthusiasm as a cyclist, collector and purveyor of fine cycling products has only grown over the years and continues to fuel my passion as a business owner. Novelist Thomas Wolfe spent a decade of his childhood growing up in his mother’s Asheville boardinghouse. Called “Old Kentucky Home” the house was patronized by summer tourists and health seekers during the early years of the 20th century. These boarders would later inspire many of the colorful characters in Wolfe’s 1929 novel, Look Homeward, Angel. The house itself was recast as “Dixieland” and would provide much of the setting for the story. Today, tours of the Old Kentucky Home provide a glimpse into Asheville’s early rise to prominence as a resort for health and recreation as well as the stories associated with Thomas Wolfe’s colorful and turbulent childhood here. An adjacent visitor’s center and museum contains a self guided exhibit hall and 22 minute film presentation on Wolfe’s life and writings.
Thomas Wolfe famously wrote “You can’t go home again,” but don’t let that stop you from exploring the Asheville native’s boyhood home.
A contemporary of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, Wolfe secured his place in the American literary canon with the critically acclaimed publication of his unabashedly auto-biographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel, in 1929. Local admiration didn’t come as easily: His unflattering portrayals of family and some 200 thinly disguised townspeople of Asheville (aka “Altamont”) prompted hometown scorn. Following eight years of self-imposed exile, Wolfe re-turned a hero in 1937, having boosted tourism during the Great Depression.
Asheville still embodies the “boomtown” spirit that so captivated Wolfe. “Some things will never change,” wrote Wolfe, and a walk through his onetime stomping grounds continues to reveal a colorful cast of characters.

Asheville Golf Course is a true gem and one of the oldest courses in Western North Carolina. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this classic layout was designed by famed course architect Donald Ross in 1927 and it accomplishes the difficult double task of being challenging and fun.
The front nine of the par 72, historic course spans 3,246 yards from the back tees. Its scenic design allows for the use of a driver on most holes. Meanwhile, the 3,194 back nine favors accuracy over distance. Although not long by today’s standards, the course proves length does not make a great course.

An anchor fly is a beaded nymph that is weighted to get to the feeding zone quickly. Anchor flies are commonly used in Euro Nymphing and similar tight-line angling methods.

Found ‘Em Fishing was born out of passion. We love the outdoors, plain and simple. We find our serenity there, and we want to share that. Through education and consciousness, we are out there to protect the beautiful waterways in WNC. There is a special bond between self and nature that almost can’t be explained out there. A peace that so many have forgotten in their daily lives. For us, there is something meditative about smooth paddle strokes through water, come with us, you’ll see.
Join us on our unique day hikes in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains. We offer mindfulness and meditation day hikes where you can disconnect from screens, slow down, and enjoy the gorgeous mountains outside of Asheville, North Carolina. Our guides are highly experienced in both wilderness guiding and meditative practices. We lead group Mindfulness Hikes every Tuesday-Friday from 9a-1p.
Not into meditation? No problem. We also offer private day hikes that suit what you’d like to see and do on your trip. For our group hikes, once you book with us you’ll receive detailed directions of where to meet us at the trail head. Before our hike we’ll spend 10-20 minutes giving you an overview of mindfulness practices and then hit the trail! We’ll take you to local spots leaving the crowds behind, making sure to point out local flora and fauna along the way. You’ll be shocked how much you notice once you slow down and become more attuned to your senses.
Around noon we’ll find a beautiful spot to break for lunch and enjoy a healthy lunch from a local Asheville eatery. After lunch we’ll spend time swimming, taking in a beautiful view, or admiring a waterfall, all while engaging our 5 senses. Give yourself the opportunity and time to go inward and be fully present on this unique trip.
The mission of Pura Vida Adventures (est.2006) is to offer personal trips to families, friends, and small groups which focus on exploration, discovery, and adventure. Our guides also provide you with an opportunity to see the North Carolina mountains through any variety of these activities over one day or a series of days.and waterfall Pura Vida Adventures was the first company to offer commercial canyoneering and waterfall rappelling east of the Mississsippi River, in addition we are the only company east of the Mississippi that is accredited by the American Canyoneering Association. Over the past 10 years we have trained hundreds of aspiring canyoneers and canyoneering guides.
