I want Rhubarb to be where the important stuff happens.
I believe in the power of the table, the value of passing food, and of sharing stories and listening. These moments around a shared table deepen the ties between people we care about, in turn strengthening the web of our families, friendships, and communities.
Sharing food is transformative. I have experienced it throughout my life with family and friends and strangers. As a chef, I have witnessed how sharing a meal can reveal insights and discovery – often unexpected – about who we are and why we do what we do. These experiences deepen the connections between us, connections that ultimately elevate our lives.

Though it’s beginnings rose in the streams and mountains of western North Carolina – a place of mountain trout and small farms – it also has a hand and heart inspired by traditions far from our borders. This mélange of local food prepared with other worldly traditions of the table may have helped the Market Place garner national attention but the keen reverence for the heritage and roots of Appalachia has always remained at the center of what we do.

Hill House. It’s from a different time, when people relaxed and lingered; talked into the night, not into computers; slept amid trees and awakened to birds singing. A time when they savored long, hearty, friendly breakfast and played parlor games all afternoon.
But it’s a place with one foot also very much in the present as well as that past we all cherish. Rooms that hint both of Grandma Knows and Guitar Nights. A huge, grassy lawn for play and an Appalachian garden for inspiration. Breakfasts with French-pressed coffee from Javataza, our signature fresh fruit juices, and eggs, cream, breads, cheeses, and who-knows-what surprises all served with a chef’s insights.
