Altamont Anglers fly fishing guides have been guiding and teaching anglers since 1986. Our knowledge of the waters around our home of Asheville, NC lets us customize fly fishing trips to your special needs & desires. Asheville fly fishing offers the daytime experience of pristine trout streams set in beautiful Smoky Mountain settings and the evening experience of a vibrant downtown that offers fine dining, entertainment and arts.
You will find our rates for full-day or half-day float trips to be fair and competitive, with quality equipment and expert instruction. Orvis fly fishing gear is standard for all our trips, to match the quality of service provided by our guides. Our guides are CPR certified, and we are fully insured.
When we want the rewards of fishing to more challenging fish, we travel toward Tennessee and the tri-cities area of Johnson City, Elizabethton and Kingsport where we fish the TVA controlled tail-water streams of the South Holston River or the Watauga River. The releases of water below TVA dams on these rivers provides for constant year-round stream temperatures, predictable hatches for us to match, and excellent opportunities for float-fishing that rival the legendary fly fishing rivers of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho and the Rocky Mountains.

Biltmore is as magnificent today as it was when it was built more than a century ago. George W. Vanderbilt created the estate in the 1890’s as a grand retreat in the North Carolina mountains. Mr. Vanderbilt brought in Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of American landscape architecture, to design the gardens and trails. Biltmore was the last great project for Olmsted, whose work also includes New York’s Central Park and the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. The Estate is still privately owned and operated by George Vanderbilt’s descendants

I want Rhubarb to be where the important stuff happens.
I believe in the power of the table, the value of passing food, and of sharing stories and listening. These moments around a shared table deepen the ties between people we care about, in turn strengthening the web of our families, friendships, and communities.
Sharing food is transformative. I have experienced it throughout my life with family and friends and strangers. As a chef, I have witnessed how sharing a meal can reveal insights and discovery – often unexpected – about who we are and why we do what we do. These experiences deepen the connections between us, connections that ultimately elevate our lives.

Feel the rush of sliding down a 60-foot all-natural water slide in the heart of gorgeous Pisgah National Forest! The appropriately named Sliding Rock is an experience unlike any other and it’s one of the most exciting ways to cool off in the warmer weather months.
People of all ages lineup to take the plunge down the sloping rock face waterfall on their way to landing into an 8-foot-deep pool of water. Given that the water is about 50-60 degrees during the season, it’s sure to be a refreshing adventure! I’m a classically trained pastry chef, and I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for (cough cough) a looong time. That’s where I learned to be so witty. 😉 In 2014 I started making cute little custom cakes for friends and family. Just for fun, because I missed making art, because friends don’t let friends eat a dry cake. Then people started requesting them, paying for them, coming up with crazy ideas. I spent the next year or so making four or five celebration cakes a week, holding down a full-time job, and running my entire business from a Facebook page.

Novelist Thomas Wolfe spent a decade of his childhood growing up in his mother’s Asheville boardinghouse. Called “Old Kentucky Home” the house was patronized by summer tourists and health seekers during the early years of the 20th century. These boarders would later inspire many of the colorful characters in Wolfe’s 1929 novel, Look Homeward, Angel. The house itself was recast as “Dixieland” and would provide much of the setting for the story. Today, tours of the Old Kentucky Home provide a glimpse into Asheville’s early rise to prominence as a resort for health and recreation as well as the stories associated with Thomas Wolfe’s colorful and turbulent childhood here. An adjacent visitor’s center and museum contains a self guided exhibit hall and 22 minute film presentation on Wolfe’s life and writings.
Thomas Wolfe famously wrote “You can’t go home again,” but don’t let that stop you from exploring the Asheville native’s boyhood home.
A contemporary of F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, Wolfe secured his place in the American literary canon with the critically acclaimed publication of his unabashedly auto-biographical novel, Look Homeward, Angel, in 1929. Local admiration didn’t come as easily: His unflattering portrayals of family and some 200 thinly disguised townspeople of Asheville (aka “Altamont”) prompted hometown scorn. Following eight years of self-imposed exile, Wolfe re-turned a hero in 1937, having boosted tourism during the Great Depression.
Asheville still embodies the “boomtown” spirit that so captivated Wolfe. “Some things will never change,” wrote Wolfe, and a walk through his onetime stomping grounds continues to reveal a colorful cast of characters.

Indian chaat (street snacks) plus homestyle platters (thalis) in a funky, laid-back space.
Chai Pani literally means “tea and water.” It’s slang in India for going out for a cup of tea, a tasty bite, a snack, or “a little something.” In Downtown Asheville (and now in Downtown Decatur) it means innovative, fun, affordable and delicious Indian cuisine. We’d go so far as to say it’s “mindblasting.”
Some of the best food of any country is its street food, and Chai Pani features chaat – crunchy, spicy, sweet, tangy, brightly flavored Indian street snacks. And because there’s nothing more comforting and delicious in any culture than a home cooked meal, Chai Pani also brings you thalis – traditional family meals highlighting India’s amazing culinary diversity.
The New York Times was particularly taken by our “fresh, cilantro-strewn takes on Indian street food,” GQ Magazine lauded our “Indian street food with a twang,” and New York Magazine called us “a star in downtown’s dining scene.” The Huffington Post had us on their list of “Top 10 Cheap Eats in the US,” and even Fox News called us the “hit of their Asheville trip.” (We’re just glad we could get them all to agree on one thing)!
We’ve made it from Bombay to Buncombe, so step off the sidewalk and into the street – Indian Street Food that is. (Couldn’t resist!)
